After quickly drying my hair, I threw some clothes into a bag. I didn’t have to agonize over what to pack—the choice of what fit me was limited since I hadn’t got around to shopping for any maternity clothes yet. I hoped what I’d packed was suitable for wherever we were going.

Josh had insisted on taking his car to Austin, and as he needed to grab some clothes, we were heading to his place in my Bug. I was apprehensive about seeing Josh’s parents, especially his mom. They had been over to the ranch many times for family barbecues and parties and were friendly with my parents, but I felt awkward around them. I got the impression from Josh’s mom that she never really liked me; I was loud and sassy, and I thought she saw me as unrefined.

Josh was driving my car and I wrung my hands in my lap, my stomach churning with nerves as we got closer to his house. I’d only been to his place a handful of times before, and it had been years. As we drove up the huge gravel driveway, I gasped at just how gorgeous the house was. Although I’d been there the night before, it had been dark and I hadn’t exactly been in the right frame of mind to admire where I was. “This place is beautiful Josh!” I exclaimed as he parked outside an enormous detached garage. He jumped out and ran around to the passenger side, opening the door and holding his hand out for me to take. I smiled up at him as he helped me out.

“You’ve been here before, haven’t you?” he asked as he gently pulled me out of the car and into his arms.

“Yeah, but it’s been a while. I forgot how big it is.” I looked up at the house. There were three large windows on each side of the front door, and huge pillars that held up a porch that ran the length of the house. The front garden was dotted with sculptured trees and brightly colored rose bushes, and the driveway was big enough for at least 10 cars.

“It’s too big. There are only the three of us, and Mom and Dad are hardly here these days.” He let go of me and reached into the back seat, grabbing my bag.

“Are they here now?” I asked him nervously.

He shook his head. “No, they’re on a six-week cruise, and Dad left me to run the business. They’ll be back just after Thanksgiving, and they’ll be glad not to miss Lib and Mason’s wedding.” Since Josh was part of the wedding party and his parents were friendly with mine, Mason and Libby had invited them to the reception. I breathed a sigh of relief knowing I wasn’t going to have to face them; I couldn’t imagine how they would react to the fact that Josh and I were dating, let alone me being pregnant. Taking my hand, Josh led me up the steps to the front door.
